Song: My favorite poem
June 11, 2008 – 3:31 pm
With words, a poem can give a richer image of an experience than a photography can show.
The clouds are bound to the earth and the wind.
As long as they gather high over Turin,
life will be good. I lift up my head
and watch the great game unfold in the sun.
Rock-hard white masses surrounded up there
by blue wind—at times it undoes them
and reshapes them into vast light-soaked sails.
Over the roofs, clouds by the thousands
cover all things: the crowds, the stones, the uproar.
Often I’ve risen and looked down to find
clouds gleaming in the basin’s clear water.
Trees too bring together the sky and the earth.
And immense cities resemble the forests—
from down in the streets, we get glimpses of sky.
Like the vital trees on the banks of the Po,
heaps of houses live in torrents of sunlight.
Trees too suffer and die beneath clouds;
man bleeds, and he dies—but he sings his joy
between the earth and the sky, sings the great marvel
of cities and forests. Tomorrow there’s time
to crawl into my shell, gritting my teeth. For now life’s made
of clouds and of plants and of streets, all lost in the sky.
Song, Cesare Pavese
Thou shalt not rap
June 6, 2008 – 9:56 am
Christians like bad rap.
GodTube has a hip-hop channel. Baby Got Book is the most watched video on the channel. It’s more popular on GodTube than YouTube. It has 739,000 views on YouTube but 965,000 on GodTube.
Youth Ministers rap at church. If you bring a friend to church and the pastor or youth minister rap, your friend isn’t coming back, ever. Just because it’s easy to change the lyrics to make a make a secular song “Christian” doesn’t mean it should ever be done.
Christians who aren’t musically talented assume it’s easy to rap and are encouraged to do so because the church wants to be relevant. I was in a staff meeting where the pastor was encouraged to do a rap to reach out to young people. Fortunately, he didn’t.
Hopefully, no one is creating a Christian parody of Soulja Boy (imagine your pastor trying to do the dance) as an entry for the 2009 Holy Hip Hop Music Awards.

Students from NOCCA’s summer music program played at the House of Blues in 2004. Learn more about the school at their YouTube page.
Some of the best jazz I’ve heard in New Orleans, came from elementary and junior high school students. Not just from NOCCA, but also a jazz orchestra from Lusher Charter School.
On YouTube, church and porn are related
May 28, 2008 – 4:56 pm
A church member emailed and said there was an inappropriate video on our church’s YouTube page. On two of our videos, called “Tour of Children’s Building - First Hattiesburg”, the Related Videos feature showed a video called “Porn makes you horny”. Not good.
Related videos on YouTube are automatically generated–you have no control over them. My only option was to remove the video of the building tour.
You shouldn’t keep your church’s videos off of YouTube because of this, but you need to be aware of some of the limitation and negatives of using free web services.
From YouTube’s Help Center:
Can I control what displays in the “Related Videos” section next to my video?
You do not have control over what videos are displayed in the “Related Videos” section. These are automatically selected based on certain factors. If there are videos shown that you feel are inappropriate based on our Community Guidelines ( http://youtube.com/t/community_guidelines ), please use the flagging feature beneath the video. It will bring it to our attention immediately.
